Question: Why and in what way is Sam
fighting?
Answer: "You are
right - it is all about fighting man to man as opposed to high-tech
war-situations, where you don't have to see the enemy (Isn't that what Dr
Cazlet of Orbit was all about?) Its easy to fight an enemy you can't see -
where all you have to do is press a button. You dont have to see mutilated
bodies, travesties of what was once human. Its so much more difficult when
you're faced with a human who's flesh and blood, just like you. That's when you
get down to thinking, why am I doing this? ...one thing common to all the fight
sequences is that the boys are never the ones to iniate a fight. Everything is
always in response to a threat.
Why Sam fights - I think think the
answer boils down to survival (kill or be killed), to neutralizing a
life-threatening situation (kill or watch thousands of innocent people die). "

Evidence: All
Fighting sequences from "Back to Business" (27.03.99) to "Glory Days"
(17.07.99)
"Sam is a handy man to have on your
side whether its fisticuffs (Orbit), or a gun battle (almost all eps but
especially Skorpion, First Strike, High Speed, Glory Days). He doesn't pull his
punches nor does he hesitate to pull the trigger. He uses his fists well and
he's a crack shot. You can tell he was a boxer because when it comes to a free
for all, he appears to rely on his fists (Phoenix, Tusk Force, Orbit) (I am a
karate exponent myself and I prefer kicks - but in unarmed combat, I use a
combination of punches and kicks)." Susan Morden, 23.03.2000
Comment: The guys use
their guns more often than their fists but I think its more out of necessity.
Its stupidity to try unarmed combat when you are faced with an Uzi or a
Kalashnikov or a gun of any sort, especially when the weapon is in the hands of
a person who wouldn't think twice before killing you. I think as we invent more
and more sophisticated weapons, the more difficult it will be for law enforcers
to avoid shootouts, the more difficult it will be to bring in someone alive for
questioning. For someone who thinks first, Sam shows no hesitation in pitching
into battle if a friend is in trouble. Like I said, its very comforting to have
Sam on your side in a fight.
